You’ve probably heard that “Black Friday” is coming up on November 27
th but may not know what it really means. In the United States, Black Friday refers to the biggest shopping day of the year, which always occurs on the Friday after Thanksgiving. In the business world, when a company is profitable, it is referred to as being “in the black,” so Black Friday is the day retailers hope they make enough sales to become profitable for the entire year. Most stores run big sales and slash their prices to draw customers through their doors. Some even open at 12:01 a.m. on Black Friday and customers often line up in the early morning hours to get deals on electronics, clothing, computers and all sorts of other things they buy for the Christmas season. The first Monday after Thanksgiving has become known as “Cyber Monday” because many online retailers extend sales their weekend sales so that when people arrive back at work on Monday morning, they can continue to shop from their desks.
